I think the second figure really requires color to make sense of it.
By the way, I'd be curious to find out what your experience is if you
actually play Blox. It seems to be a stalemate game since blocking is
still too easy.
One variation I was going to try sometime would make it illegal to cover
the last space on any block, either your own or your opponents. This
would make blocking a bit harder without necessarily making connecting
harder. Hard to say.
