I wish to second the suggestion of another contributor that Nonesuch Records re-issue the wonderful recording (H-71155)of the Rachmaninoff Sonata in G minor, played by Harvey Shapiro and Earl Wild. Shapiro's rich tone and sure authority put the lie to the idea that this sonata is actually a florid piano composition with cello accompaniment. And Wild, whose piano concerto cycle was marred only by certain cuts he inexplicably indulged, plays this music with a big heart and breathtaking virtuosity. For all the renewed interest in recording the sonata in recent years, this one still stands as among the most beautiful and powerful readings yet recorded. I would also recommend including Edward Tatnall Canby's fascinating and enlightening notes. Please, by all means, bring back this classic recording of a glorious late-romantic work for cello and piano.
