I think that would be a great idea -- HyperNews as a BBS. You could set up a computer with RAS (Remote Access Server) to take standard PPP protocol TCP/IP calls, then you could run PWS (Personal Web Server) and Perl and set up a computer that would work just like the Internet web browsing, and running HyperNews would take care of your discussion forums. You could also run a POP3 server so they could exchange e-mail with their standard e-mail programs.
You would have 0 learning curve since it would be just like using the Internet, only they are dialing into your RAS rather than an ISP POP. (Internet Service Provider - Point of Presense) And they would use the regular browser.
