Speeding up HyperNews

I've Installed Hypernews on my system
Sparc 10 (load 1.5)/Perl5.001m

The system is perceptivly slow in response as it has to build up the response tree etc
Something like 8-12 seconds on a 14.4 modem with just 10+ responses.
Is there anyway that I can speed up the HyperNews performance.
In fact I just require a bare-bone threaded response system without any frills.
My actions:
I've already commented out code to do access-authentication (As any one can read & post on my system)
Is there anything else that I can do ?
