Early versions of HyperNews only let you give URLs of responses you write on your own server. Not many people wanted to use it that way, and I changed my mind about whether it is scalable to let people write responses on the machine serving the base article. It is no worse than archiving a mailing list, for example, and better because topics will tend to be very focused.

So now you are allowed to either provide a URL that points anywhere or enter the text directly and have it stored on the machine that serves the base article.
