GCC Compiler and Perl Interpreter without hassle?

I was wondering if someone could save me from some misery. Here at the L.A. County, I have a Sun Sparc 5 running Solaris 2.5 Intranet Web server and would like to program some C code for CGI and install HyperNews. The only problem is the installation guides for Perl 5 and GCC are extremely large and involved. Does the installation process A) distribute components in different locations (like when a windows application installs) or B) does everything reside under a specific directory? If the answer is B, and if its not too much trouble, could you tar the installed dirctories of your "C" and Perl components and contact me so I can obtain them over the Internet.

Thanks
