Unable to add Response

I have just completed installing version 1.9B5.4 of HN (server software is NCSA httpd).

My configuration options are to allow only members to post responses, while anyone can read. Only the Admin can create base articles.

Problem: When (as a member) I attempt to add a response, I get a message
"Permission Denied". I do not get a prompt to authenticate the user either.

From a similar problem outlined by another user, it seems that the authentication is being conducted by HyperNews and not the server.

How can I get the httpd server to do the authentication?

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
