This is a variation on the previous questions in this branch. I have a shell on the server's host. My HN forum must be reliable and secure.

I have free use of a server, but very limited support from its administrator. If I can figure out how to do it, I can do it. If I am successful, my HN forums will get big and a lot of people will depend on them. Therefore it's not practical to have HN run with the web server's uid; it must run as me. The only way I know to do that is to pass each HN call through a ``wrapper'' program that's installed (by me) with mode 4755, i.e. setuid on.

alternatives

  1. I wrote a trivial C wrapper that passes all its args through. I could install it with hard links (they take less space than symlinks) and make it call different scripts according to what name it's called.
  2. I found CGIWrap but it looks like a lot of work to adapt.

Has anyone already done this job? I hate to re-invent.
TIA, as they say.

Cameron
