Snags in configuration for Linux

I am having a bit of a difficult time with setting up HN 1.9b31 with Linux 1.2.14. I am inclined to think that perl may be the culprit because I found a few things that were tripping up the scripts. (or were tripping me up)

The problem I am havin gnow is with responding to an article. I get
500 server config errors (malformed header from script)
and an
"Error in HyperNews" Cannot open .../.responseNum-new

Is HN looking for the full URL (including host?) (If it is , where am I losing the host info.)
