When I wrote HyperNews in the early days, it seemed obvious to me that the back button is an essential part of web browsers. Most browsers still provide the back button, though you can optionally turn off the display of the buttons. But lots of people seem to be allergic to use of the back button. And many web pages seem designed with that in mind leading the user ever forward until they forget where they were or where they are going. From a practical standpoint, it is difficult to always remember where the person was so that we can return them. The membership form is a case where membership is site-wide (or installation-wide), so there is not a specific forum to go to next unless we remember which forum you were at previously. If you decide to join while in the middle of writing a response (because you want to enter a user ID instead of just your email address), then you really have to return with the back button since reloading the form will leave it empty. Perhaps the best route is for HyperNews to use JavaScript (if your browser supports it) since we can figure out where you were previously in your history, if we are lucky, and provide a link back to that page. dan |
