By default, the NEW icons change after 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month.
You can change the default for the whole installation in the hnrc
file. It really should be a per forum option, as most options should
be. Even better, it should automatically change based on how rapid
the messages are coming in. Even better, it should be based on
whether each user has seen the message, but that would require a huge
database.

If by "reset" you mean clear them from the display while
not changing the way they behave otherwise, no there is no way.
