The display depth of the outline of messages is limited
to a default value so that there is not too much displayed
at one time to readers.
We should have a way of visually signalling that there is something
new deeper in the tree than is visible - it won't be too
hard to add that, but it won't happen for a few months.
But people who are interested in responses will have subscribed to be notified by email when new responses are added, if that feature has been enabled on the forum you
are talking about.
