Future: HyperNews Searching

This page is for discussion of incorporating searching capability into HyperNews.

To facilitate finding information relevant to readers, each HyperNews page could have a searchable index for information that it contains, as well as for the kinds of information in the pages it links to. A search starting from some particular page would first check the index for that page, and then forward the search on to the pages that it links to. Not all links should be followed with the same likelihood, so there must be some heuristic for determining the degree to which a link is relevant to the initial query. This is similar to the fish search idea, but the matching would be based on associated indexes provided by the authors rather than by the document contents. A hibred of the two could be used; if there is an index, use that, otherwise fake it by looking at the contents.

The index for each page could automatically change according to what information is indexed by linked pages. On a periodic basis, some portion of each index would be propagated to linked pages. Each page would remember the index information for itself and some depth of neighboring pages. Which index information is kept for a page could also change automatically based on what information users actually search for.

I think a query needs to be both general and specific, so that the general part may be matched first, and then the specific part would have a better chance of matching. For example, if you wanted to search for visual languages for the macintosh, you would specify the most general concepts first, such as computers and languages, and then specify in more detail visual languages for the macintosh. This corresponds to how information is organized and interrelates. There are other ways to relate information, and these could also be used in a query. For example, part-whole relationships would apply to finding information about a car engine part. The links from a page should identify what kind of relationships hold between the page and the linked pages. These relationships could then be used to speed searches.

Related to evolving the index for each page, as discussed above, the links in a page (or some specialized pages with this capability), could evolve based on what people search for starting at that page. The links that are found from the search could be added, and less popular links could be dropped.

There are other ways to evolve the information in a page based on peoples' responses to the page. These ideas are discussed more elsewhere.
