At this time, you are licensed to copy, install, and use this version of HyperNews with no financial obligation to HyperNews.org or NCSA. You may even charge for access to your HyperNews services. Also, no royalty is due in the following situations:
If you are interested in selling your version of HyperNews with proprietary modifications, then we ask for a royalty. Please request details by email (liberte@hypernews.org) or contact us with any other questions or comments.
Obsolete: Before downloading the source, you should be aware of the compatibility requirements. Please subscribe to the history forum so you will be notified when new releases occur. (Please do this especially if you install a beta version.)
The latest version, 1.11 is available here: hypernews.tar.gz.
Previous versions are also available:
The HyperNews documentation in HTML, including the installation and user instructions, are here: hndocs.tar.gz, but you can just read them online as well by visiting the various HyperNews forums.
If you are downloading to an MS Windows machine, be sure the ".gz" is preserved so WinZip (6.0 or above) knows what to do with the file. Maybe change the filename to use .taz instead of .tar.gz. (HyperNews doesn't run on Windows, by the way.)
After downloading the source, you need to read and carefully follow the installation instructions. The online version might be more up-to-date.
If you find any bugs, please report them to an appropriate page based on what feature has the bug, if you can figure it out. For example, if bugs occur during installation, add to the installation page. Use the bugs page as last resort. There is a HyperNews Test page to which you may add miscellaneous tests of our version for comparison.
If you improve the HyperNews code, by all means let us know so we can pass your changes on to others. It's better for you also if we incorporate your changes into the base distribution, so you don't have to redo your changes each time you install a new release.
We are now starting to use SourceForge for its CVS capabilities, so we can share the development effort. Please visit
.
We'd like to include a reference to your public forums from the About HyperNews forum or one of its subforums. Referencing all known installations of HyperNews helps us show how HyperNews is being used elsewhere, which encourages more use, which encourages more development, etc.
For a similar reason, please include a reference to the HyperNews.org site in your documentation about your installation of HyperNews. That way, more people find out about HyperNews, which leads to more use and eventually more support.
