Can I create my own forum for discussion?

I am wondering if I can post an article for discussion and have my class then join in a group discussion. Can a discussion forum be private - to include only those in a particular virtual "classroom," for example?

I am not sure, for example, if I can have a threaded class discussion or if I can post assignments this way.

Any one doing that?
