If you reply to message 8, the poster of message 8 and any higher messages (ie "parents" or messages that 8 is a reply to) will get an email. Also anyone who has independently subscribed to the forum or a message in the chain will get an email as well.
When you click the subscribe button you will be subscribed to the whole forum if you are currently looking at the main page, but if you click on a message and then hit subscribe it should list the message you are looking at as the one you will be subscribing to. It assumes you want to be subscribed to all replies as well, unless you uncheck the boxes listing them.
