Ms Bartoli is different from any other singer I've seen not only because her face is so very expressive but because her expressions fall into two quite distinct groups: those which she makes when she is concentrating on some technical feat, rather like those faces which instrumentalists pull in the same circumstances, and those which she assumes to illustrate or enact the words she's singing. Almost all the expressions she assumes on the videorecording of the Savoy Hotel recital of 1992 quite clearly fall into one or other of these groups and not both, though she switches between them, unblinkingly, very quickly. Few of her expressions strike me as being especially 'weird', but perhaps those which are expressions of concentration are more idiosyncratic than the other type. Roger |
