When you consider the fact that the object of performing is making the most of your abilities and sharing them with the public both of the questions that you pose (1. the fact that Despina is a secondary role 2. the concept of Cecilia being a Mezzo)are irrelevant. You don`t need to be prima donna to steal the show, it`s all in your effort and talent.Cecilia has something called versatility, that she obviously wishes to display. Although Despina is a soubrette, generally intended for the lighter soprano, if Cecilia can do it, why shouln`t she. Grace Bumbry ( considered a mezzo)once said in an interview that singers are too categorized and because of this don`t exploit their full potential. She recommended that if the voice can do it and the singer likes it, then they should do it no matter what the register. I second that.
