I got caught by opera about a year ago, starting with Wagner recordings, but as i felt i needed something lighter, i accidentally fell onto the "Barbiere" record by Patanč.
I litterally melted when i heard her sing 'una voce poco fa' or the last words 'caro a te mi raccommando - tu mi salva per pieta" in the duet with Mattheuzzi of the second act.
Even on recording, she managed to put more feeling, more emotion in her singing then la Callas, la Nilsson or Kiri have ever done.
Her case is a bit like Lauritz Melchior's (who was in fact a high baritone, like she's in fact a high mezzo): "why is she the greatest?" - "just listen to her, you'll understand".
It was only later that i heard that she was in fact one of the most famous singers on this planet en i bought the 'Gluck Italian Arias'. It was wonderful to hear her ( peculiar, but beautiful) voice leap up and down the coloratures in a tempo and with a vituosity that one can barely take for human.
