Okay, this is going to start a lot of trouble, but here's my question: C.B. has put on some weight recently, no? Now, in the most recent Opera News, there was an interview with Carol Van Ness, who has lost quite a bit of weight in recent memory, through exercise, not diet. Ms. Van Ness points out that she feels she is a stronger singer now because she is in better physical condition. Still, there seems to be an idea around the opera world that being heavy is not detrimental to a singer's voice, but is, instead, beneficial. Looking at the issue from a purely physiological perspective, it would seem that being in better shape, particularly better cardio- vascular condition, would be a big plus for an opera singer, since such stamina and respiratory efficiency are required. I'm wondering if C.B.'s much-commented-upon "small" voice wouldn't be helped by doing a little time on the stairmaster. Let the argument begin! |
