Wasn't the Dewey Decimal System developed for just such a
purpose ? From what I understand, libraries have been
wrestling with 'organizing' ALL information at least since
the Great Library of Alexandria of 200 BC or so... This is not an alphabetical system, but one way of grouping topics together, and subtopics, and sub-sub topics. Of course, with paper and stacks, you can't have the hyperlinks now possible. But the familiar library interface could be another 'view' of any comprehensive online library of information. I guess the card catalogs are just alphabetical, but the nice thing about organizing the books by the Dewey Decimal System is that once you find *one* that interests you, the nearby books are also relevant. Perhaps this 'view' would be a good application of VRML, actually wandering a Virtual Library in 3-D. |
