I'm another AT hiker wannabe, and I share your concerns about hiking alone, though I really think that is the ultimate way to enjoy the hike. You mentioned that friends of your family had a bad experience on the Trail. I'm interested in hearing about their experience, as I'm trying to learn as much as possible about things of that sort before I hit the Trail, probably some time next year.
