Just returned from doing the CT section with two women friends. We are all in our 40s so probably a little older than you. I met a thru hiker named Gianna who has been hiking alone for a while and her biggest problem came from an animal (non human). I can understand wanting to do it at your own pace. My experience has been that the hikers I met were the nicest group of people I've met in years. I felt safe alone and when we were sharing space with a bunch of guys. I don't want to minimize your Dad's fears but I don't think hardened criminals are heading to the AT.
