Having led hikes as a backpacking instructor at a Royal Ambassador Camp in VA and now section hiking NC & VA since '89 I can say even as a guy I feel safer in an AT shelter at midnight than any big city street during the day. I carry a knife, though I've only used it to cut blisters and band-aids. I've met some guys with guns, though I think they are stupid and cowards, especially since firearms are outlawed on the AT. Sure, bring mace if you wish, though you may only use it on the rats. I too am looking for hiking partners. If you find that web site, let me know - Golden Badger
