Garmin is offering a user installed flash upgrade for the GPSII+, the 12 & 12XL, and the GPS III. The following

Keith Whistler SAR ------------------------------------------------------------ This download area offers a free upgrade for the GPS 12 and GPS 12XL Versions 3.50-3.52, GPS II+ Versions 2.00-2.06, and GPS III Versions 2.00-2.04. This upgrade only applies to these versions as it is specific to the hardware platform hosting the software. This service is being offered on an experimental basis to test the feasibility of product support and software upgrades over the Internet and may be withdrawn at any time. System requirements:
The following are required to upload the software update into your GARMIN GPS unit: IBM compatible PC (386 or higher microprocessor running DOS, Win 3.1x, or Win 95) with an available Com 1 or Com 2 port. PC Interface Cable for your GPS unit. The PC Interface Cable may be purchased through your local GARMIN distributor, or ordered directly from our Sales department.
Currently Available software updates: GPS IIPlus software version 2.07 GPS 12/GPS 12XL software version 3.53 GPS III software version 2.05 Instructions for uploading the new software to your unit: Download the appropriate self-extracting zip-file for your GPS unit into a directory on your hard drive. (i.e. c:\garmin) Unzip the files into this directory by running the executable file (.exe) Connect your GPS unit to a free serial port (Com 1 or Com 2) on your PC with a PC Interface cable. Turn on your GPS unit and ensure the Interface setup is set to GRMN/GRMN. From the DOS prompt, change directory (CD) to the directory in which you unzipped the files, (i.e. c:\garmin), and run the update program: updatesw.exe. During the software upload, the unit's display will indicate "UPLOAD IN PROGRESS". The upload process should take approximately 3-10 minutes to complete.
