We all get something out of volunteering--personal satisfaction, feeling good, whatever. My concern is that
volunteering is alturistic as opposed to a step to a vocation.
EX: A volunteer fireperson in MD recently sued to have his rejection for a paid fireperson's position overturned. He had
physical limitations that made it impossible for him to pass the agility and fitness tests allowed for this position
by statute. It was alleged that he had joined the volunteers because it would give him preference points towards the paid job, not because he wanted to volunteer.
Maybe we are getting too philosophical here, maybe all we need is a warm body who will do the job adequately becasuse they see it as paying their dues on the way to a career, not an enthusiastic, alturistic, volunteer. Irv Lichtenstein 215-233-3360 215-233-2343 fax
