THIS IS A PASTE OF A K9 E-MAIL LIST POST THAT MAY BE OF INTEREST TO SOME OF YOU.
A few of you have asked me about radios for K9 training and SAR work. So any of you that have been looking for a cheep FM Two-Way radio for your team use or to use in training, should check out the local Radio Shack store for there model 21-1805 Family Radio. It is a 7 channel UHF (462 MHZ) hand held radio made by Motorola. It is a half watt radio that uses 3 AA batteries that will run it for about 10 hours of working use. Range will be about 1/4 to 1 mile. The radio has built in CTCSS tone guard that prevents hearing any other non-related users, but with 7 channels you can just switch if you get someone to close. I recommend that channel 6 be the standard SAR calling channel and that teams use channel 7 (462.7125) as the operations standard channel with a tone of 118.8 or code E. If you use UHF commercial or GRMS radios now, these are compatible with most programable UHF radios. The good news is they are being discontinued for about $90, down from the $170 list. A selection of earphones and mics. are avalible. This radio will not work for all of you but is worth a look. We tested some today and were very happy with them. For training, special events or for an around basecamp radio they work great. I do not recommend them for actual SAR operations alone as they are very low power. Also NO LICENSE is required. If you get any please send me your comments after you try them. Good Luck
