SDI can work across platforms if both platforms implemented SDI over the same transport layer.

The design of SDI was intended to provide a common set of operations over potentially different transports. Because of our partnerships with companies such as Adobe and SoftQuad, we needed to implement a common browser communication mechanism using the native transport layer for the platform (DDE, OLE, AppleEvents...). A TCP/IP implementation of SDI could run on any platform, and provide the inter-platform communication which was not important to our initial partners.

The point is, the idea of having clients and browser running on different platforms is not thrown out the window.
