WWW Work

• I created the HyperNews system as one way to evolve the organization of information via the collaboration of users.

• The collaboration idea grew to encompass annotations. I was very concerned about scalability and wrote: A Protocol for Scalable Group and Public Annotations with Alan Braverman. Recently, I presented Security Concerns for WWW Annotation Mechanisms at a workshop in Vienna on Voting, Rating, and Annotations

• I was tasked with figuring out what to do about Uniform Resource Names and wrote: Path URN scheme specification with Michael Shapiro. That proposal was founded on some still radical ideas, A simplification of URN and URC issues, which I have argued strongly on various IETF lists and presented at web conferences ("URN:" - Does a name need a name?). The need for scalable resolution mechanisms is paramount.

• I was also tasked with figuring out what to do about Uniform Resource Characteristics and Searching. I collected resources on the subject of WWW Searching and decided that Distributed Searching is essential. I presented this argument, Centralized and Distributed Searching, at a W3C workshop on Distributed Indexing and Searching.

GNU Emacs

• Here is a copy of the GNU Emacs Manual - the user manual. (I had nothing to do with it.)

• I edited early versions of the GNU Emacs Lisp Reference Manual for Emacs Version 19, ISBN: 188211471X. Here is Revision 2.4.2, December 1996, in small sections. You can get it from: Debian Package: elisp-manual 19-2.4-2

• My masters project in computer science at UIUC is a source level debugger for Emacs Lisp called Edebug - included in the above GNU Emacs Lisp Reference Manual.

• Other projects: Leif (interface to incremental parser), math-mode (Mathematica interface), isearch-mode (minor mode for incremental searching), and Hideif (C ifdef mode). The Emacs Lisp Code Directory is a large archive of contributed software, which includes most of mine.

Politics

• Proportional Representation and Approval Voting are schemes designed to make democracy work better. Getting them used in America requires defeating the two-party system.

• The League for Programming Freedom needs your support.
• I was added to some unknown mailing lists that advertise business deals, after I tried to help someone else get dropped from the same lists. Evil spammers should be blacklisted.

Miscellaneous

• I previously worked on the OGIS project. My major contribution was a nice abstraction of spatial objects. Also check out the Image Understanding Environment

• I created a construction strategy game: Blox that uses Legos.
